1. What is your first priority at the scene of an accident or emergency?

2. What is the best initial treatment for a burn?
*
Put butter on it
Break blisters and cover with non-stick dressing
Run under running water for up to 20 minutes
Remove jewellery and clothing, including anything stuck to the burn
3. What is the correct procedure for performing CPR on a casualty?

1 breath & 5 compressions every 5 seconds: 12 cycles per minute
30 breaths & 2 compressions: rate of 100 compressions per minute
2 breaths & 15 compressions: 20 cycles per minute
30 compressions & 2 breaths: rate of 100 compressions per minute
4. How should you best help someone suffering from shock?

Slap them across the face
Give them a warm drink
Maintain body warmth but do not heat
Remove tight clothing
5. What should you do if someone's been bitten by a snake?
*
Immobilise the limb using a compression bandage, rest and reassure the casualty
Chase and capture the snake to help identify the venom
Panic
Wash the bite area
6. A child is suffering from an asthma attack. What should you do?
*
Lay the child down and ensure adequate fresh air
Give them 4 puffs of any available Reliever inhaler (repeat every 4 minutes as required)
Loosen tight clothing
Give them 4 puffs of only their own Reliever inhaler (repeat every 4 minutes as required)
7. What is the best way to treat heavy bleeding from a deep laceration?
*
Apply a tourniquet above the cut to reduce blood flow
Lie them down and tell them not to panic
Apply direct pressure to the wound, elevate and rest
Clean the wound and bandage the entire limb firmly
8. Someone has slipped and twisted their ankle. There is pain and swelling. How could you help?
*
Give the casualty pain relief to ease the pain
Rest the ankle, apply an ice pack & compression bandage and elevate the limb
Elevate the leg and apply a hot pack to ease the pain
Assist the casualty to walk on it as soon as possible
9. How would you treat a casualty with a suspected broken arm?
*
Immobilise the arm firmly to the body with a sling
Ask the casualty to move their arm around to check for fractures
Bandage the arm tightly & watch for signs of loss of circulation to the hand
Immobilise fractures gently and manage shock if necessary
10. How would you manage a nose bleed?
*
Tilt the head forward slightly and have the casualty pinch their nostrils
Tip the head back and pinch the bridge of the nose
Lie the casualty down and keep them warm
Alternately apply heat and cold to the neck and forehead
